Family Fitness Spotlight: Kickboxing

One of the most notorious reasons people stop working out is simple boredom. They’re trying to do one exercise several days every week, and eventually, it just gets old. That’s why it’s important to have a deep bench of workouts that you can toss into your routine now and then.

To help you build that bench, our fitness experts are highlighting a series of workouts on our blog that you can enjoy with your family. Today, the spotlight is on kickboxing.

What Is Kickboxing?

Kickboxing is actually a very unique sport. It was primarily developed by combining elements of karate and boxing, but it was influenced by a variety of other martial arts too. At its core, kickboxing is a workout that involved a varied routine of punches and kicks.

Benefits of Kickboxing Workouts

Kickboxing is usually the first thing that comes to mind when people think of a workout – you’re more likely to picture aerobics, running, or weightlifting instead. But kickboxing is actually a fantastic workout for several reasons.

Full-Body Workout

During a typical kickboxing session, you’re on your feet the entire time while alternating between punches and kicks, all while maintaining a slightly squatted stance. If you’re doing a well-constructed routine and maintaining proper form, a kickboxing session will work your legs, arms, and core. It also keeps your joints moving for improved mobility and flexibility.

Self-Defense and Empowerment

Kickboxing is more than a workout; it’s a self-defense tool too. It’s an excellent form of training for your kids to have so that they can protect themselves if necessary, and it’s an empowering and confidence-building experience for them too. In fact, the same is true for adults, and all of us could use a boost in confidence every so often.

Family Fun

A kickboxing session is one of those workouts that turns out to be more fun than most people expect. It’s a high-energy exercise that’s often done with fun music in the background, and once you’re in the rhythm, the kickboxing itself can feel more like a dance to the music than a workout.

Tips for Your Family Kickboxing Workouts

If you want to start tossing kickboxing into your family’s workout schedule, it’s easier than you might think! Follow these tips to introduce it smoothly.

Learn the Basics Before Going Solo

It can take time to get into the groove of kickboxing and to learn the basic form and essential moves. Instead of trying it on your own, start with either an in-person kickboxing class or a video routine of kickboxing for beginners. It may even help to start with a video that introduces you to the basic moves without a full workout routine. Your family can do this together and can gradually increase in difficulty.

Be Careful to Avoid Monotony

Kickboxing can feel repetitive, so you probably don’t want to use it as your go-to exercise three times per week. Try tossing it into the workout rotation once per week or so to keep things interesting.

Kickboxing is one of many ways you can enjoy a great workout with your family to benefit everyone’s health while also enjoying a fun activity and some together time. For more ways to boost your family fitness, learn about our Mommy and Me fitness program and follow us on Instagram!
